Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) for the 482 Visa: Search Your Occupation

Checked against government sources on .

A person on a library ladder sorts a tall shelf of work items: a chef's hat, a stethoscope, a spanner, a hard hat, a laptop, a hammer and a whisk.

The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) holds 456 occupations for the Core Skills stream of the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), each identified by an ANZSCO 2022 code in LIN 24/089, compilation No. 3, in force from 7 November 2025. Search the list below by occupation name or 6-digit code, then read the last column: if the position falls within that circumstance, the occupation cannot be used for that nomination. A listed occupation is one condition only; the nomination must also pay at least $79,423 and the annual market salary rate for the role.

Is your occupation on the CSOL?

An occupation is available in the Core Skills stream only if four checks line up:

  1. Find the ANZSCO 2022 occupation whose tasks match the position. Under section 6(1)(c) of LIN 24/089, a listed occupation applies only if the tasks the nominee will perform correspond to the ANZSCO tasks for that code.
  2. Search that occupation or code in the list above.
  3. Read its applicable circumstance, if it has one. Under section 6(2), the occupation does not apply if that circumstance applies to the position.
  4. Check the salary: at least $79,423 and the annual market salary rate. At the Specialist Skills threshold, an occupation in Major Group 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6 moves to the Specialist Skills stream.

The 456 occupations come from six of the eight ANZSCO major groups:

ANZSCO major group Occupations on the CSOL
1 Managers 47
2 Professionals 235
3 Technicians and Trades Workers 141
4 Community and Personal Service Workers 23
5 Clerical and Administrative Workers 8
6 Sales Workers 2
7 Machinery Operators and Drivers 0
8 Labourers 0

What does an applicable circumstance mean?

An applicable circumstance is a description of a position, numbered in section 7 of LIN 24/089, that removes a listed occupation from a nomination when it applies. The same circumstances also bar the occupation in the Specialist Skills stream (section 8). Of the 456 occupations, 34 carry at least one circumstance:

Counts add to more than 34 because some occupations carry two or three circumstances. Accountant (General), for example, carries circumstances 2, 11 and 13.

How do you find your ANZSCO code?

The code comes from the tasks of the job, not its title. Three steps settle it:

  1. Compare the position’s main tasks with the unit group and occupation descriptions in ANZSCO 2022 on the Australian Bureau of Statistics website.
  2. Choose the 6-digit occupation whose tasks and skill level fit the position.
  3. If an earlier visa used an older code, check whether ANZSCO 2022 has split or reclassified it, and choose the code that matches the tasks, as the Home Affairs skilled occupation list page directs.

The guide to the ANZSCO code works through an example from task list to code to list.

What if your occupation is not on the CSOL?

Three routes remain when an occupation is not on the list:

  1. The Specialist Skills stream, for any occupation in ANZSCO Major Group 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6 at guaranteed earnings of $146,576 or more. It has no occupation list.
  2. A labour agreement, including a DAMA. Each DAMA has its own DAMA occupation list, and these lists include occupations the CSOL does not. The Northern Territory DAMA, for example, lists 325 occupations, including Truck Driver (General) 733111, on the NT Government’s NT DAMA occupations list.
  3. An existing 482 holder is not affected when an occupation is removed from the list. Pending nominations and visa applications are not affected either. A holder is affected only when a new nomination is needed, for a new employer or a new occupation, according to the Home Affairs skilled occupation list page.

Which occupations need a skills assessment?

In the Core Skills and Specialist Skills streams, a mandatory skills assessment applies where the mandatory skills assessment instrument, IMMI 18/039 on the Federal Register of Legislation, lists both the occupation and the applicant’s passport. It names 24 occupations:

  • 23 trade occupations, including chef, cook, baker, carpenter, electrician (general), motor mechanic (general) and welder (first class), assessed by Trades Recognition Australia for holders of the passports listed against each occupation;
  • Program or Project Administrator 511112, assessed by VETASSESS for applicants of every nationality.

The assessment must be undertaken or commenced within the 3 years before the visa application, and it must be commenced before the application is lodged, or the application is invalid. Exemptions include a current 482 holder already employed in the occupation and a relevant qualification from Australia or from a country not listed for the occupation. Home Affairs can ask for an assessment in other cases too. The 482 visa skills assessment guide sets out the passports and exemptions.

Is the CSOL the skilled occupation list?

The CSOL is one part of what Home Affairs calls the combined list of eligible skilled occupations, and it is the only part that applies to a 482. Each list uses a different edition of ANZSCO:

List Used for ANZSCO version
Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) 482 Core Skills stream; 186 Direct Entry stream ANZSCO 2022
MLTSSL, STSOL and ROL Other skilled visas ANZSCO 2013
State and territory lists State nomination for other visas, not the 482 —
No list 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream, which follows the occupation of the most recent 482 ANZSCO 2022

A search for the “skilled occupation list” therefore returns several lists. For a 482 nomination, only the CSOL matters, and the Temporary Residence Transition stream to permanent residence has no list at all.

When does the Core Skills Occupation List change?

The Minister for Immigration decides the list and how often it is updated, on advice from Jobs and Skills Australia. The dates so far:

  • 3 December 2024: Home Affairs announced the CSOL of 456 occupations (news item 1269).
  • 7 December 2024: LIN 24/089 came into force with the Skills in Demand visa.
  • 25 August to 26 September 2025: Jobs and Skills Australia consulted on the 2025 CSOL (JSA consultation page).
  • 20 October 2025: Jobs and Skills Australia gave its advice to the Government.
  • 7 November 2025: compilation No. 3 of LIN 24/089, the version in force.

No replacement instrument was on the Federal Register of Legislation as at 24 September 2026. A date for a new list has not been published.

Occupation guides

Four occupations show how the code changes the route to a 482:

  • Registered nurses (unit group 2544) and Enrolled Nurse 411411 are listed with no circumstance. See nurse visa sponsorship.
  • Chef 351311 and Cook 351411 are listed with circumstances 3 and 4, and need a Trades Recognition Australia assessment for holders of 15 passports. See the 482 visa requirements for chef guide.
  • Truck Driver (General) 733111 is not listed, so the route is a DAMA or another labour agreement. See truck driver visa sponsorship.
  • Retail Manager (General) 142111 is listed with no circumstance. See retail manager on a 482 visa.

An Australian migration lawyer makes the nomination more likely to be approved by testing the job description against the ANZSCO tasks and the listed circumstance before it is lodged. That matters because a nomination refused on the occupation is not one of the Skilling Australians Fund refund cases, and a mandatory skills assessment not commenced before lodging makes the visa application invalid.

Unregistered agents

An unregistered agent who gives immigration assistance on a sponsorship, nomination or visa is breaking the law (Migration Act 1958 s 280). They also carry no professional indemnity insurance, so if their mistake leads to a refusal, lost fees or a closed pathway, the worker or employer has no insurer to claim against. A practising Australian lawyer must carry that insurance.

Questions people ask

What does CSOL stand for?

Core Skills Occupation List: the list of 456 occupations that can be nominated in the Core Skills stream of the 482 visa, set in LIN 24/089.

What is the difference between CSOL and STSOL?

The CSOL has been the only occupation list for the 482 since 7 December 2024 and uses ANZSCO 2022. The STSOL was the list for the short-term stream of the old TSS visa; it stays in the combined list for other visas and uses ANZSCO 2013.

What occupations are eligible for the 482 visa in Australia?

In the Core Skills stream, the 456 CSOL occupations. In the Specialist Skills stream, any occupation in ANZSCO Major Groups 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6 at the higher threshold. In the Labour Agreement stream, the occupations an employer's agreement lists.

What are the new occupations on Australia's skilled occupation list for 2026?

No new CSOL had been made as at 24 September 2026. Jobs and Skills Australia gave its advice on the 2025 review on 20 October 2025, and the 456-occupation list in compilation No. 3 of LIN 24/089 still applies.

Is a truck driver on the CSOL?

No. No machinery operator, driver or labourer occupation is on the CSOL. Truck drivers reach the 482 only under a DAMA or another labour agreement.

Ask a migration lawyer about your case

A 482 is three separate approvals, and one missed criterion in any of them refuses the lot. Workers and employers who have an Australian migration lawyer prepare the sponsorship, nomination and visa are more likely to be approved the first time. Describe what you are trying to do and an immigration lawyer can contact you.
