Form 1022 tells the Department of Home Affairs in writing about a change that makes an answer on a visa application incorrect, and section 104 of the Migration Act 1958 requires that notice as soon as practicable. The duty lasts until the visa is granted if the applicant is in Australia, or until immigration clearance if the applicant is outside Australia, and the form warns that a visa is liable to be cancelled if a change is not reported (Form 1022, design date 03/18). The quickest route is the Update details screen in ImmiAccount; applicants who cannot use ImmiAccount complete Form 1022 and email or post it to the office that has their application, with official evidence of the change.

What is Form 1022, and who uses it?
Form 1022 is the Home Affairs form Notification of changes in circumstances. The Form 1022 PDF is used by three groups:
- Visa applicants whose answers change before a decision is made.
- People with any other matter before the Department, such as a proposed cancellation; the form tells them to send it to the office handling that matter.
- Sponsors adding information while a nomination is assessed, as the sponsor tab of the Home Affairs Core Skills stream page describes.
The form has five parts: your details; other applicants; details of changes, where each piece of information that is no longer current sits beside the new, correct details; visa and application details; and a declaration signed by the applicant and each other applicant aged 18 or over.
Which changes must be reported, and by when?
Any change that makes an answer on the application incorrect is reported “as soon as practicable” under section 104(1) of the Migration Act 1958. The duty stops at grant for an applicant in Australia and at immigration clearance for an applicant outside Australia (section 104(2) and (3)).
Home Affairs lists the changes it expects to hear about:
- marriage or a de facto relationship;
- divorce or separation;
- a change of name;
- a death in the family;
- the birth of a child;
- a new address, phone number or email address;
- a new passport.
Form 1022 states the consequences. The Department takes the new information into account in its decision, and a visa is liable to be cancelled if a change is not reported.
Changes versus mistakes
A change is reported on Form 1022. An answer that was wrong when it was given is corrected on Form 1023, and section 105 of the Migration Act 1958 applies to it despite the grant of the visa.
How do you lodge Form 1022?
ImmiAccount comes first; the paper route, set out on the Home Affairs page Applying on paper (updated 22 May 2026), is for applicants who cannot use it.
- Try ImmiAccount first: the Update details screen handles most changes without a form.
- If ImmiAccount cannot be used, download Form 1022 and complete it in English.
- List each piece of information that is no longer current, and the new details beside it.
- Attach official evidence of the change, such as a marriage certificate or a birth certificate.
- Email or post the form to the office where the application was lodged; for an application in ImmiAccount, attach it to that application.
Home Affairs publishes no processing time for Form 1022.
What does VEVO show after a change?
VEVO shows the visa, its dates and its conditions, and a check needs the travel document the visa is linked to. After a new passport, the visa has to be linked to it before a check with the new number works as expected: Home Affairs says ImmiAccount links it within 3 business days and the web form takes 14 days (Home Affairs, You have a new passport, updated 24 September 2026). A name or relationship change does not change the visa’s conditions. How a VEVO check works, and what it shows for a 482, is covered separately.
On a 482: which changes a 482 holder reports, and when a new job needs more than Form 1022
A 482 adds a sponsor, a nominated occupation and a salary floor to the ordinary reporting rules:
- What the holder reports. The Core Skills stream page, under “Tell us if things change”, lists changes to contact details or passport, changes to the employer, changes to employment status including promotions and changes in hours, changes to relationship status, and the birth of a child.
- Hours and pay. After a change, earnings still have to meet the Core Skills Income Threshold or the Specialist Skills Income Threshold that applied to the nomination, according to the Home Affairs 482 change in situation page.
- A new employer is not a Form 1022 matter. The new employer must be an approved sponsor with an approved nomination before the worker starts.
- The sponsor’s own duty. The sponsor tells Home Affairs within 28 days when employment ends or duties change, under the Home Affairs sponsor obligations page.
- A new child. A child born in Australia to a 482 holder is taken to hold the same visa from birth (Migration Act 1958, s 78), and the parents still tell Home Affairs.
- A new partner, or a child born outside Australia. They join through a subsequent entrant visa 482 application, with the sponsor’s written agreement.
A migration lawyer makes it more likely that the visa stays secure because they decide which channel each 482 change belongs in (the worker’s notice, the sponsor’s notice within 28 days, or a new nomination), and a change of duties or hours reported as a notice when it needed a nomination can leave the worker outside condition 8607.
The streams, the nomination and the conditions behind these rules are set out in the main 482 visa Australia guide.
Supplementary: changing employers on a 482
A job change on a 482 is handled by a new nomination, not by a notification. The new employer lodges its own nomination, and the worker starts only once it is approved, because condition 8607 ties the visa to the sponsor and the occupation. The steps, costs and timing are explained in changing employers on a 482 visa.
Questions people ask
What is Form 1022 used for?
It tells Home Affairs about a change that makes an answer on a visa application incorrect, such as a new address, a marriage, a separation or a new child, as section 104 of the Migration Act 1958 requires.
Where can I submit Form 1022?
Use the Update details screen in ImmiAccount if you can. Otherwise attach Form 1022 to the application in ImmiAccount, or email or post it to the office that has your application.
Who needs to file Form 1022?
A visa applicant whose circumstances change before a decision, and anyone with another matter before the Department, such as a proposed cancellation.
Can I use Form 1022 after my visa is granted?
The section 104 duty ends at grant for an applicant in Australia, but a visa holder still tells Home Affairs about changes such as a new child, a new passport or, on a 482, a change of employer. Home Affairs accepts Form 1022 for a new child when ImmiAccount cannot be used.
How do I upload Form 1022 to ImmiAccount?
