A 482 subsequent entrant is a partner or dependent child who applies for their own Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) after the primary holder has lodged or been granted, paying $4,015 for the first applicant from 1 July 2026. Before lodging, the family member needs a written letter from the sponsor that holds the most recent approved nomination, agreeing to include them in its sponsorship. The application is made online from inside or outside Australia (not in immigration clearance), and each applicant must meet the health, character (aged 16 and over) and health insurance requirements.

From eligibility to grant
- Check eligibility. The applicant is a member of the family unit of a 457 or 482 holder (Migration Regulations 1994, cl 482.312), and the primary holder’s application is still being processed or has been granted (Home Affairs subsequent entrant page).
- Ask the sponsor for a written letter agreeing that the applicant may be a secondary sponsored person (cl 482.315(b); subsequent entrant page).
- Prepare the checks. Arrange health examinations before lodging, which Home Affairs advises to reduce processing time; police certificates for each applicant aged 16 or over; and health insurance for the whole stay (subsequent entrant page).
- Lodge online and pay. From 1 July 2026: $4,015 for the first applicant, $4,015 for each additional applicant 18 or over and $1,005 for each additional child under 18. A child applying alone pays the base charge of $4,015. Health checks, police certificates and biometrics cost extra.
- Wait for a decision. Home Affairs publishes no processing time for subsequent entrants (see below).
- Grant. The visa ends with the primary holder’s visa (cl 482.511 item 3).
Who can apply as a subsequent entrant?
A partner or dependent child who was not included when the primary holder applied can apply, if the primary holder’s 457 or 482 application is still being processed or has been granted. Family members cannot be added to an application after it is lodged (Home Affairs subsequent entrant page). Who counts as family, including the ages and dependency rules, is set out under 482 partner visa.
For a later 482, an existing 457 or 482 family holder also qualifies if they are a spouse or de facto partner, a child under 23 who is not engaged, married or in a de facto relationship, or a child 23 or over who is dependent through incapacity (cl 482.312(2); Home Affairs Core Skills stream page).
The secondary criteria each applicant must meet, in Part 482 of the Migration Regulations 1994:
- the sponsor’s written agreement, unless already listed on the nomination (cl 482.315);
- adequate health insurance (cl 482.314);
- health and character (public interest criteria in cl 482.317);
- substantial compliance with the conditions of the last visa held, if in Australia (cl 482.311);
- no paying for visa sponsorship in the previous 3 years, unless it is reasonable to disregard it (cl 482.313).
There is no English criterion for a secondary applicant: the English requirement applies to primary applicants (Home Affairs sufficient English page).
What does the sponsor need to do?
- Give the written agreement that the applicant may be a secondary sponsored person (cl 482.315(b)). Home Affairs says the letter extends the sponsor’s obligations to include the family member.
- Carry the obligations for the family, including reasonable return travel for the holder and family on a written request (Home Affairs sponsor obligations page).
- List existing 482 family members on any later nomination of the primary holder (reg 2.72(6)). A secondary holder who is not listed on the latest nomination gives Home Affairs a ground to cancel that family member’s visa (reg 2.43(1)(ld)).
- Notify Home Affairs of changes within 28 days (sponsor obligations page).
What else the sponsor owes the worker and the family is set out under employer sponsor obligations.
A migration lawyer is more likely to get a subsequent entrant granted without delay because they obtain the sponsor’s written agreement in the form cl 482.315 needs and check that later nominations keep listing the family, since a family member missing from the latest nomination gives Home Affairs a ground to cancel their visa.
What does it cost?
| Applicant | Charge from 1 July 2026 | Pacific Island or Timor-Leste passport concession | Who pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| First applicant | $4,015 | $3,290 | The applicant |
| Each additional applicant 18 or over | $4,015 | $3,290 | The applicant |
| Each additional child under 18 | $1,005 | $825 | The applicant |
| A child applying alone | $4,015 (the base charge) | $3,290 | The applicant |
| Subsequent temporary application charge, where it applies | $700 per applicant | – | The applicant |
| Sponsor’s written agreement | No government fee | – | The sponsor |
The concession follows the primary holder’s passport and covers the family. The charge is not refunded if the application is refused (subsequent entrant page). The full list of charges is on the 482 visa fee page.
How long does a subsequent entrant take?
Home Affairs publishes no separate time for subsequent entrants: its processing time guide, as read on 24 September 2026, lists only the Core Skills, Specialist Skills and Labour Agreement streams, the nomination and the sponsorship. The subclass 482 processing time for each stream is the nearest published figure: for context only, 50% of Core Skills visas were decided within 4 months and 90% within 9 months.
Home Affairs names four things that slow an application:
- an incomplete application or missing documents;
- slow replies to requests for more information;
- the time needed to check the information provided;
- the time other agencies take on health, character and national security information.
How long does their visa last?
Until the end of the primary holder’s permitted stay (cl 482.511 item 3). When the primary holder renews, each family member applies for a new visa too (subsequent entrant page). If the primary visa is cancelled under section 116 of the Migration Act 1958, family visas are cancelled with it (s 140(1)).
Time limit
A child included as a dependant aged 18 to 22, or as a family member under 23 on a later 482, holds a visa that ends no later than the day before their 23rd birthday, unless they are dependent through incapacity (cl 482.511 item 4).
Unregistered agents
An unregistered agent who gives immigration assistance on a sponsorship, nomination or visa is breaking the law (Migration Act 1958 s 280). They also carry no professional indemnity insurance, so if their mistake leads to a refusal, lost fees or a closed pathway, the worker or employer has no insurer to claim against. A practising Australian lawyer must carry that insurance.
