Employment Reference Letters for a 482 Visa

Checked against government sources on .

A printed reference letter on company letterhead, with the job title, dates and weekly hours highlighted.

An employment reference letter for a 482 visa must be on the employer’s letterhead and give the referee’s name, title and contact details, the position held and the dates of service, because it is the main proof of the 1 year of experience the visa requires. That experience must be full-time or equivalent, in the nominated occupation or a closely related field at the same skill level, and within the 5 years before the visa application (Migration Regulations 1994, cl 482.221 and 482.231). The first step is to ask each employer you rely on for its own letter covering every period you will count, with the hours worked each week so part-time work can be converted to full-time equivalent.

What must a reference letter say?

A 482 reference carries the four fields Home Affairs lists, then the two that prove the legal test:

  1. The employer’s letterhead.
  2. The referee’s name, title and contact details.
  3. The position held.
  4. The dates of service, with a start date and an end date.
  5. The hours worked each week, or whether the job was full-time or part-time.
  6. The main duties performed, in the referee’s own words.

The Home Affairs Core Skills stream page says references should “cover a period sufficient to demonstrate relevant skill level”. Experience need not be continuous, and part-time or casual work counts if it adds up to the full-time equivalent of 1 year.

The Skills in Demand visa needs 1 year of experience, not the 2 years the Temporary Skill Shortage visa required before 7 December 2024 (cl 482.221(1) and 482.231(1)).

Who can sign it?

Home Affairs requires the employer’s letterhead and the referee’s name, title and contact details. It publishes no rule on how senior the referee must be.

In practice, the referee is a person at the employer who can confirm the dates, the hours and the duties, such as a manager who supervised the work or someone from human resources with access to the records.

A 482 applicant must satisfy public interest criterion 4020 (cl 482.217 of the Migration Regulations 1994), so a bogus document, or information that is false or misleading in a material particular, can lead to refusal. A refusal on that ground also stops the grant of later visas that apply criterion 4020 for 3 years (PIC 4020(1) and (2)).

Matching duties to the ANZSCO description

A “related field” means tasks that are the same as, or closely related to, those of the nominated occupation, at the same ANZSCO skill level. The 482 uses ANZSCO 2022, not OSCA, under section 4 of LIN 24/089 on the Federal Register of Legislation. How to find the right code, and where OSCA fits, is covered under ANZSCO and OSCA codes.

Home Affairs tells sponsors that a nomination’s duty statement should “substantially align” with the ANZSCO tasks without copying them. The same logic applies to the worker’s references.

In practice, duties described in the referee’s own words, which a decision-maker can match to the ANZSCO tasks, carry more weight than a pasted list.

What backs a reference up?

A reference is read alongside five other kinds of evidence:

  1. A curriculum vitae with the full employment and education history, dates and positions, covering at least the last 5 years (Home Affairs Core Skills stream page).
  2. Qualification certificates.
  3. Any licence or registration the occupation needs.
  4. Payslips and employment contracts, where available; they are not on the Home Affairs list for the 482, but they back up the dates and hours.
  5. Program evidence for experience gained during a Master’s or PhD, an internship or an apprenticeship, which the Home Affairs Core Skills stream page lists as ways to gain experience (conditions apply).

References for a skills assessment

A skills assessment is mandatory only where IMMI 18/039 names the occupation and the passport: 24 occupations, assessed by Trades Recognition Australia for 23 trades and by VETASSESS for program or project administrator. The assessment must be commenced before the visa application is lodged, or the application is invalid, and it must be undertaken or commenced within the 3 years before the application.

The assessing authority sets its own reference rules, which can differ from what Home Affairs asks for; this guide does not restate them. How the VETASSESS skills assessment works for a 482 nomination is covered separately.

An Australian migration lawyer makes the experience criterion more likely to be accepted because they read each reference against the ANZSCO tasks and the nomination’s duty statement before the visa is lodged. The decision-maker compares the letter, the CV and the nomination, and a document found to be false or misleading engages public interest criterion 4020, which can stop later visas being granted for 3 years.

Supplementary: proving the TRT’s two years of sponsored work

The 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream counts full-time sponsored work in Australia: 2 years in the last 3, across any approved sponsors, and the time need not be continuous. Home Affairs asks for documents that show the employment period, paid and unpaid leave and any overseas trips, together with PAYG payment summaries, employment contracts, payslips and leave records (Home Affairs TRT page, “Work experience documents”). The rest of the 482 visa work experience rule, and the full 186 TRT requirements, are set out on their own pages.

Questions people ask

How do I get a work reference letter?

Ask each employer whose experience you rely on for a letter on its letterhead, signed by someone who can confirm your dates, hours and duties, with their name, title and contact details.

How do I request an employment letter for a visa?

Tell the employer which periods and duties it needs to cover, and that it must state your position, your dates of service and your hours, because Home Affairs uses it to test your experience.

What should a work reference letter include?

The employer's letterhead, the referee's name, title and contact details, your position, your dates of service, your hours and your main duties.

What do I write in a reference letter for immigration?

The employer writes it, not the applicant, and it states facts that can be checked. It should not copy the ANZSCO description word for word.

Does part-time work count for a 482 visa?

Yes. Part-time or casual work counts if it adds up to the full-time equivalent of 1 year, and it need not be continuous.

Ask a migration lawyer about your case

A 482 is three separate approvals, and one missed criterion in any of them refuses the lot. Workers and employers who have an Australian migration lawyer prepare the sponsorship, nomination and visa are more likely to be approved the first time. Describe what you are trying to do and an immigration lawyer can contact you.
